Google AI Overview tracker
Google AI Overview Tracker: See Which Sites Google's AI Answer Cites
BlogAmplify tracks Google AI Overviews in two ways. Your tracked questions are searched on Google every day, and each overview is read for whether it names or links your business. Every week, SERP watch reads Google's first page for your articles' main searches and flags overviews that cite other sites but not yours, so the article can be updated.
Two checks, two jobs
One check measures how Google's AI answer treats your business. The other watches the searches your articles already rank for, where a small edit can make the difference.
| Check | What it reads | How often | Plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tracked questions | Google's results for each of up to 50 questions your customers ask, and the AI Overview on them | Daily | Growth + AI Visibility, and extra websites with AI visibility |
| SERP watch | Google's first page for the main search of your articles ranking at positions 4 to 20 | Weekly, up to 15 articles a site | Every plan |
How an AI Overview is read
AI Overviews are read from Google's own results. For each tracked question we search Google, read the overview and the sites it cites, and record whether it names your business, links a page of your site, or names competitors instead. Google AI Mode is tracked as a separate engine with its own figures.
Google doesn't show an overview for every search. A search without an AI Overview counts as no answer and is left out of the rates, so your numbers describe the overviews that exist, not how many Google chose to show. In CamClo's run of Oct 11, 2026, 49 of its 50 questions brought an AI Overview; the one that didn't stayed out of the rates. Of the 44 overviews on questions that don't name CamClo, 4 named it and 4 linked its site.
In the AI visibility score, Google AI Overviews carry the same weight as ChatGPT, the largest of the five engines. The rest of the scoring, and a full sample report, is on the AI visibility page.
SERP watch on your articles
SERP watch looks after the articles BlogAmplify has published for you. Each week it picks articles that have been live for at least 14 days and whose main search sits at positions 4 to 20 in Search Console's latest weekly snapshot, most impressions first. Without Search Console it reads up to 8 articles a week that have been live for 3 weeks or more, starting with the ones read longest ago. Each article is read at most once a week, and at most 15 a site in any 7 days.
Each read keeps:
- the top 10 results and your article's place among them;
- the AI Overview, the sites it cites and its shape: a list, a table or a paragraph;
- the featured snippet and who owns it, People also ask and the map pack, when Google shows them;
- another of your pages ranking for the search instead of the article.
The editor shows the latest weekly read of each article's search, with the sites that moved above you since the previous read.
The AI Overview gap
The AI Overview gap is a search where your article ranks in the top 10 and Google's AI Overview cites other sites but not yours, in the last two weekly reads. Two reads, not one, because an overview can change from one day to the next, and a single read could send an article for an edit it doesn't need.
The gap is only flagged while the article ranks in the top 10, where it is already one of the pages Google chooses between. What it often lacks is a passage the overview can quote whole.
What changes in the article
A gap starts an automatic article update. It reads the pages ranking at the top of that search for what your article lacks, gathers checked sources, and writes the passage that answers the search as a quotable, self-contained answer of 40 to 60 words. When the overview answers with a list or a table, the passage gets a short list or table too.
The edit is small and checked before it goes live:
- the title, the address and the publish date never change;
- a rewritten paragraph keeps most of its words and every link it had;
- new facts come only from checked sources, your own business facts or the article itself, and every number is checked against them;
- the change is listed on Site Health with its reason and can be undone for 30 days.
The same hint for the overview rides along when an article is updated for another reason, such as sitting just off page one or losing traffic, whenever its latest reads show a gap.
Featured snippets and AI Overviews
For years the answer box to win on Google was the featured snippet. In 2026 Google shows AI Overviews where snippets used to be: when we checked 5 searches in October 2026, none showed a featured snippet and 3 showed an AI Overview. That is a small sample, but it is why the answer-format work targets the AI Overview. SERP watch still records a featured snippet and its owner whenever Google shows one.
Where you see it
- In the editor: each article has a "Who ranks and what we added" card with the pages it was researched against, what it covers and adds, then the latest weekly read with the AI Overview and the article's Search Console position.
- On Site Health: Article updates lists every change, why it was made and its sources, with undo. Keyword rankings show each article's main search week by week. See Site Health.
- On AI visibility: your tracked questions, engine by engine, with Google AI Overviews as one of five, on Growth + AI Visibility.
Limits
- A search without an AI Overview counts as no answer and is left out of the rates.
- Google's results differ by place, device and time. Each read is one snapshot, which is why the gap needs two weekly reads in a row.
- SERP watch reads up to 15 articles a site a week. Articles outside positions 4 to 20 aren't picked while Search Console says where they rank.
- Daily overview checks on your tracked questions need Growth + AI Visibility. SERP watch runs on every plan.
- We can't make Google cite a page. We give it a better passage to cite and show you what happens.
Connecting Google Search Console gives SERP watch its positions. For the wider picture of writing for AI answers, see the GEO strategy checklist and how to measure AI visibility.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI Overview tracker?
It is a tool that searches Google for the queries you care about and records whether an AI Overview appears, which sites it cites and whether your business is named or linked. BlogAmplify also acts on it: when an overview cites other sites for a search your article ranks for, it updates the article.
Does a search without an AI Overview lower my score?
No. A search where Google shows no AI Overview counts as no answer and is left out of the rates, so a week in which Google shows fewer overviews isn't scored as a loss. It is still recorded, so you can see how often your questions bring an overview.
How often are AI Overviews checked?
Every day for your tracked questions, up to 50, on Growth + AI Visibility. Separately, on every plan, SERP watch reads Google's first page for your articles' main searches once a week, for up to 15 articles a site.
Will Google cite my article after an update?
Nobody can promise that. The update gives Google a short, self-contained answer to quote, written from checked sources, and SERP watch keeps reading the search each week, so you see whether the overview changes. Every update can be undone for 30 days.
Do I need Google Search Console connected?
It isn't required, but it helps. With Search Console, SERP watch picks the articles whose main search sits at positions 4 to 20, most impressions first. Without it, SERP watch reads up to 8 articles a week that have been live for 3 weeks or more, oldest reads first.
